About WuDeBei
The genesis of Chinese Traditional Martial Arts has been attributed to the need for self-defense, hunting techniques and military training since ancient China, hand to hand combat and weapons practice were important for survival then. Over the past few thousand years, many distinctive styles have been developed, each with their own set of techniques and characteristics; each carries the wisdom of their ancestors.
The long history of traditional martial arts includes hundreds of different styles, often classified by "families", "sects" or "schools". However regardless any martial arts styles, its philosophy and ethics practice are always highly regarded. A complete training system not only trains a person physically, it should also provide insight and educate into Chinese attitudes and culture. Today, practitioners of Chinese martial arts from all over the world, each have the responsibility to pass down this beautiful art to our next generation.
Wu De (武德) can be translated as "Martial Morality" and is constructed from the words Wu (武), which means martial, and De (德), which means morality. These morals are developed from historic cultures; philosophies from the great wise men and experience through ancient war, and eventually translate into 5 main pillars of virtues namely: Wisdom (智), Trust (信), Benevolence (仁), Courage (勇) and Discipline (严).
Over the past 20 years, traditional Chinese martial arts have appeared to be highly affected by modern martial arts. Many modern schools have replaced practical defense or offense movements with acrobatic feats that are more spectacular to watch, thereby gaining favor during exhibitions and competitions. This led to many criticisms and practitioners for traditional Chinese martial arts greatly lessen. We strongly believe it’s our immediate concern to do everything we can to continuously promote and pass down this heritage.
